The goal of this 11,530 s.f. cancer treatment center was to deliver more accessible medical oncology and infusion services care to City of Hope’s patients in the Orange County area. Prior to this, the closest facility was in Duarte, nearly 50 miles away.
The team was challenged from the very beginning, as the program required more square footage than the space available in the office building into which the center was to occupy. Working with a group of clinical advisors, the design team adjusted to program to better fit the available space.
The original building featured stairs and elevators on opposite sides of the lobby, resulting in a scattered, inefficient circulation area. By relocating the main stair to allow for a more compact circulation core, the team was able to better utilize the existing space and created an opportunity to provide a large, welcoming lobby area,
