As an existing building originally constructed in the 1950s, this urgent care and family clinic had become outdated and cramped. By renovating the existing space and expanding into the adjacent retail property, the clinic is now able to accommodate nine exam rooms, an x-ray room, and support spaces for staff. At a total of 4,974 s.f., the updated facility provides a valuable community resource that blends seamlessly into the environment of its Laguna Beach neighborhood.

Because of the age of the building and the nature of the site, special care was taken to ensure the structural stability of combining the two neighboring suites; the back of the building features a cantilevered space extending over a creek bed that also required careful structural consideration. Additionally, the city had stringent requirements regarding the appearance of the building. Drawing from the rustic, industrial influences of the surrounding area, the team successfully incorporated the city’s feedback while maintaining the client’s modern aesthetic.
